This night, all night, the lean dogs of desire Have bayed upon my track, Yelping, keen of scent, afire To pull me down.
Verse (1915) Thompson, Vance, 1863-1925

Most alcoholics are bankrupt idealists!
The French proverb says, the appetite comes with eating. So in drinking, the more we imbibe, the more we desire.

A child’s service is little, yet he is no little fool that despiseth it.
Sail, quoth the king ; hold, faith the wind.

A man hated the way he walked and decided to learn how people in the city of Handan carried themselves. The result was that not only did he fail to learn the new style, but he also forgot his own way of walking. He could only but crawl back to his hometown where he became a laughing stock.

Don’t ever let anyone tell you that you cannot go through a particular door. Always be prepared to go through a door that leads to your goal.

1843 THE CONQUEROR WORM by Edgar Allan Poe
Lo! ’tis a gala night Within the lonesome latter years! An angel throng, bewinged, bedight In veils, and drowned in tears, Sit in a theatre, to see A play of hopes and fears, While the orchestra breathes fitfully The music of the spheres. Mimes, in the form of God on high, Mutter and mumble low, And hither and thither fly- Mere puppets they, who come and go At bidding of vast formless things That shift the scenery to and fro, Flapping from out their Condor wings Invisible Woe!
Those who danced were thought to be quite insane by those who could not hear the music. Angela Monet

I didn’t marry you because you were perfect. I didn’t even
marry you because I loved you. I married you because you
gave me a promise. That promise made up for your faults.
And the promise I gave you made up for mine. Two imperfect
people got married and it was the promise that made the marriage.
And when our children were growing up, it wasn’t a house that
protected them; and it wasn’t our love that protected them – it was that
promise.

An Old Doll
Low on her little stool she sits
To make a nursing lap,
And cares for nothing but the form
Her little arms enwrap.
With hairless skull that gapes apart,
A broken plaster ball,
One chipped glass eye that squints askew,
And ne’er a nose at all –
No raddle left on grimy cheek,
No mouth that one can see –
It scarce discloses, at a glance,
What it was meant to be.
But something in the simple scheme
As it extends below
(It is the “tidy” from my chair
That she is rumpling so)
Children have no use for psychology. They detest sociology. They still believe in God, the family, angels, devils, witches, goblins, logic, clarity, punctuation, and other such obsolete stuff. When a book is boring, they yawn openly. They don’t expect their writer to redeem humanity, but leave to adults such childish allusions.
